ARRIVING ON ISLAND:
The small island of St. John is serviced by the Cyril King Airport (STT) on St. Thomas. Have the taxi dispatcher direct you to the vehicle taking the most direct route to the Red Hook ferry dock. If other passengers are being dropped off along the way the 45 minute ride may take a bit longer -- but no need to worry as the 20 minute ferry to Cruz Bay, St.John departs every hour until midnight.
The weather on St. John USVI does not vary much from November through to early spring - a pleasant 75 - 85 degrees Fahrenheit with pleasant sea breezes. The hotter months are June through November when the temperature often rises into the high 80s and occasionally in August and September into the low to mid 90s. The wetter months are July through January. Early Spring and summer are the driest months but brief rain showers are common even then.
Clothing for this Caribbean Holiday should be light (preferably something that breathes like cotton) and almost always casual. Long pants are recommended if you plan to take advantage of the many hiking trails on the island of St. John. In the cooler months sleeves and/or a light wrap could be desirable in the early mornings and in the evenings.
Start off each encounter with a friendly greeting: "Hello, How are you?" before attending to any business with the St. John Virgin Island locals. These pleasantries are essential amongst St. Jonians.
Bathing suits are meant for the beach and it is considered quite rude if you don't cover up while in the town of Cruz Bay or the community of Coral Bay.
Pull over and wave by cars who want to drive faster than you. You are enjoying the scenery but they may be trying to catch the ferry to St Thomas.
Tipping is the normal 15 to 20%. Hotel rooms charge a 10% tax. There is no sales tax on your purchases.
The Morris F. DeCastro Clinic is located directly next to the park in Cruz Bay, across from the ferry. The Myrah Keating Smith Community Health Center, (693-8900) located at Gift Hill on Centerline Drive is an outpatient medical facility with a 24 hour emergency center. Walk-ins are accepted between the hours of 8 am and 8 PM. For Emergency dial 911.
4 wheel drives are recommended as the roads are steep, often rocky and can be slippery in heavy rain. Renting: In order to rent you must be at least 25 years old (check with your car rental agency), with valid license and major credit card. Foreign drivers should obtain a temporary permit from department of public safety.
It is recommended that you to reserve your vehicle as soon as you reserve your accommodations. You cannot reserve too early! For most of the year there are more visitors than available vehicles.

In the Virgin Islands you always drive on left. Pay particular attention when pulling out from a parking lot as that is when it is easiest to forget... Seat belts are required in the front seat and this law is rigorously enforced.... The Speed limit is 10 mph in town and unless marked otherwise it is 25 mph outside. It won't seem slow when navigating the hills and curves and avoiding the goats.
